Alexion Design System – AstraZeneca

At OPEN Health I led the development of a bespoke healthcare design system called Alexion Web Toolkit (AWT). The primary objective was to unite the design philosophy and simplify the development of their sites and apps. The components were all replicated in code and available on Sitecore.

Collaborating closely with a dedicated client, project managers, and a small design team, the project took two years to reach its current stage and continues to evolve. Throughout this process, I onboarded over 10 agencies, designed and built numerous components and sites, and maintained the file structure, overseeing all aspects of the toolkit's development and implementation.

The design system has successfully powered hundreds of websites across multiple brands within Alexion Unify Rare, greatly reducing design and development time.

FigJam board exploring the options for where the AWT design system should live and how external agencies and files were managed. We agreed to host the library within the clients organisation, so they had full ownership of their files, licenses and structure.

I evaluated the management of licenses, associated costs, and the process for keeping files and libraries up-to-date, while assessing the pros and cons of each approach.

CTCL Answers – What is CTCL?

PM Society Digital Awards 2023 Gold Winner – Patient Programmes.

CTCL is a simple, no-nonsense, patient information resource for a rare type of blood cancer. As part of the campaign, and working closely with a creative director, I developed the branding, detailed storyboard and website as well as the supporting printed material.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a rare type of cancer that begins in white blood cells called T cells (T lymphocytes) that can cause rash-like skin redness, slightly raised or scaly round patches on the skin and sometimes skin tumours.

This patient-centric project achieved excellent feedback from Healthcare Professionals and patients.

mRNA Unlocked Site – Pfizer

I led the design of this Pfizer mRNA technology site which showcased their technology and its potential to expand treatment and vaccine options for human health.

My role as design lead was to guide the development of the site, which involved working closely with medical copywriters, project managers and designers to align on an approach that was suitable within the design system framework. This included weekly meetings with the client and partner agencies to ensure everything stayed on track.

I became well-versed in using Pfizers design system (Helix 2.0) and trained other members of the team (both designers and non-designers) to use Figma to improve overall collaboration and foster further inclusion in the design process.

ZEJULA GSK Pro Site – GSK

The brief was to design a mobile-first website for a new GSK ovarian cancer drug called ZEJULA. I worked closely with the GSK team and followed WCAG guidelines to make the site accessible, compliant and engaging.

The project included the design of a comprehensive icon set as well as static and animated web banners to promote the the drug.

SWIFT Professional Services Branding – SWIFT

I created various touch points which included a brand book, PPT and Word templates. The emphasis was on creating a new, high-end, fresh look which could work across a wide range of materials.

The bracket device was designed to flexibly connect the Professional Services division with the SWIFT core brand. The imagery chosen focused primarily on a top-down overview of a scene.

Midjouney exploration

As a fun side project I spent time playing around with Midjourney style referencing to produce some surreal imagery that appears rendered.

These explorations gave me the tools and the confidence to use Midjourney in pitch, presentation and concept generation for a number of clients.

Tradesman Two – JCB

I produced a series of marketing images demonstrating the robust qualities of the newly launched JCB Tradesman Two mobile phone. After successfully pitching the concept, I photographed each element individually using Broncolor Scoro S 3200 RFS 2 lights set to 1/14’000 of a second to completely freeze motion.

SWIFT Sybos Social Posts + Poster ~ SWIFT

I designed a set of posters to highlight the benefits of SWIFT payments across three key sectors: Cloud Solutions, Alliance Messaging Hub and Instant Payments. I opted for a clean, bold central element.

This design was accompanied with a set of animated banners at various sizes to promote the benefits of SWIFT.

Studio Photography – Ted Baker

Ted Baker launched a series of on-ear and in-ear headphones as well as portable speakers. I photographed these new products and then composed, edited and enhanced the images using Photoshop. The final images were used for marketing purposes and published in magazines such as Shortlist and Stylist.

Falling – Boots

Boots requested images which could be printed large format and displayed in their stores to advertise various beauty and hair products. I art directed the project and worked closely with Jody Todd at Condé Nast to produce the shots. I then amalgamated and retouched the shots using Photoshop to create the composite images. The idea was to give a sense of the products falling through space to create a dynamic and eye-catching image.

Signature Collection Box – McDonald's

McDonald’s partnered up with iconic fashion designer Julien MacDonald to produce limited edition ‘Signature Collection’ burger boxes. I was tasked with artworking Julian’s vision, keeping true to his original design, whilst making it feasible for print. There was a limited run of 1,000 and only made available at select McDonald’s showcase events in the UK.

Click to Reveal (Twitter) – Carling

I created a series of ‘click to reveal’ images for Carling. When an image was clicked it would transform from one image into another using a glitch on how Twitter handles transparency within images. It was a fun way to add a bit of interactivity to a campaign.

Carling – Social Media Posts

Carling wanted a number of photographs which they could post on social media at different times of the year. The overriding aim was to create a sense of atmosphere, at all times reinforcing the Carling brand. As well as taking the shots, I chose locations, directed models and came up with the concepts.

Lift and Luminate – Boots No7

I designed a bespoke invite to No 7 events in the UK and Ireland to celebrate the launch of the new no 7 Lift & Luminate Triple Action Serum. The events were hosted by Ballerina Alessandra Ferri; keeping with this theme we created bespoke ballerina boxes which would be sent out in the place of traditional invitations. Once the box is opened, a light sensor triggers music and the rotation of the ballerina. Foil blocked invite cards were set into the trays with details of the event.

New Business – Lego

When Red was pitching to Lego, I was asked to put together images to introduce the Red Team. Taking photographs of Lego characters in and around Red’s offices and nearby streets, these images seek to create the sense of fun and light-heartedness of the Lego brand.

Bart Spices – Periodic Table of Herbs & Spices

I designed this special edition A2 litho print poster for Bart. The concept was to arrange the herbs and spices in order of intensity and flavour: loosely referring to the periodic table. As well as the concept creation, I photographed each spice individually and created the composite poster using Photoshop and InDesign.

McDonald’s – Big Mac Sauce Auction

MacDonald’s were planning to auction a one-off Big Mac sauce gun & signature sauce for charity. I developed the branding and presentation box, creating a wrap for the sauce capsule. The sauce gun was sold on eBay for £69,500.

Pocket Size Bottle Mailer – Coca-Cola

The brief was to design an infographic to mark the introduction of a new pocket sized Coca-Cola bottle. As well as designing the layout and infographics I liaised with and managed the printers to turn the project around quickly.

Fruit Drop – Robinsons

I designed the bespoke packaging and accompanying leaflet for Robinsons’ ‘Fruit Drop’ campaign. Once diluted, the amount of squash in these crates equates to the volume of water an adult should drink in a month. The packaging was designed to mirror the natural, fresh and fun Robinsons’ flavours. I liaised with several external suppliers and printers to co-ordinate the project and keep within budget.

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare – Activision

As part of the promotion for the new Call of Duty game, Activision held a series of live streams where fans could watch various celebrities play the game. I designed a series of animated GIF social media posts to direct fans to the live stream. I used a combination of InDesign, Photoshop and After Effects to create and animate the star field, nebule and text.
